Nomination Summary for Toxaphene isomers (N20008)
Nominated Substances: Toxaphene isomers
Nomination Date: 10/27/1999
Nominator: Private Individual
Rationale: P-26 and P-50 have been identified as the two most abundant toxaphene isomers in human blood. Although now banned in the US, they were once used as pesticides and have a high potential for bioaccumulation across the food chain and long range transportation. Technical toxaphene is mutagenic and there is some animal data suggesting that it is carcinogenic. Neurobehavioral effects have also been reported in developmental toxicity studies performed in rats.
