Nomination Summary for 1,3,5-Triazine-1,3,5(2H,4H,6H)-triethanol (N21002)
Nominated Substances: 1,3,5-Triazine-1,3,5(2H,4H,6H)-triethanol
Nomination Date: 12/29/2009
Nominator: Private Individual
Rationale: The most known commercial name for this material is Grotan. A prominent use is microbiocidal activity in metalworking fluids. NTP is now testing a number of metalworking fluids. Metalworking fluid exposure is associated with respiratory issues in people, some authorities have opined that MWF exposure is carcinogenic to humans. Grotan was considered for study by NTP with moderate priority in the past. The mode of antimicrobial action of Grotan is release of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is known to be carcinogenic to humans, associated with upper airway cancers and leukemia. Aerosols containing Grotan may be considered a delivery system for formaldehyde in situ in the respiratory system. The former nomination should be re-evaluated.
