Rationale: Human Carcinogen. Conduct study to investigate the association between epidemiological results of chemicals and experimental data from animal studies. Echimidine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid, is suspect as a carcinogen. Echimidine has been shown to be mutagenic in Drosophila and only slightly mutagenic in Salmonella. Several Pyrrolizidine alkaloids have been shown to be carcinogenic in rats and like the other hepatotoxic Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, Echimidine is metabolized in the liver. This alkaloid is present in herbs and honey, both of which are consumed on a substantial scale in Australia and some other countries. Echimidine is one of the most significant pyrrolizidine alkaloids from the point of view of continued low-level exposure of large populations in several countries of high living standards.
