Rationale: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers were nominated based on their bioaccumulative properties, the ongoing production of PBDEs, and the possibility for widespread human exposure through the food chain. There is a lack of subchronic and chronic toxicity information and a suspicion of neuro-developmental toxicity. Studies in rodents have shown hyperplasia of the thyroid and a decrease in circulating thyroid hormone levels after exposure to technical mixtures of PBDEs.
