Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori): Chronic Infection

    • Primary Exposures:
      • Gram negative, multi-flagellated bacterium that colonizes the stomach and causes peptic ulcer
      • Bacterium is spread by person-to-person contact especially among family member and routes of exposure include: oral-oral, fecal-oral, iatrogenic, and possibly from contaminated water
      • Risks factors for infection include age, race, socioeconomic status such as crowded living conditions, poor sanitation/hygiene
