Nomination Summary for Thimerosal (N21105)

Nominated Substances: ((o-Carboxyphenyl)thio)ethylmercury sodium salt

Nomination Date: 03/02/2011

Nominator: Private Individual

Rationale: New scientific literature supports concern that significant toxicity results from exposure levels that have been documented in human infants after their exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines. No guidelines to protect human health exist for ethyl mercury exposure despite its continued use in numerous medical applications, including products which are directly injected into human infants and pregnant women. Requests that the toxicology research recommended following review of the FDA thimerosal nomination in 2002 be completed such that safe human exposure levels can be established.

NTP Principles: not specified
