Nomination Summary for Energy Drink Components Mixture (N21302)

Nominated Substances: Acetyl-l-carnitine hydrochloride, Caffeine, Ginkgo biloba extract, Ginseng, Guarana, Inositol, Milk thistle extract, L-Taurine

Nomination Date: 11/05/2012

Nominator: Private Individual

Rationale: Although some of these components have been studied individually, there is not sufficient or adequate toxicological information available to fully assess the short-term and long-term safety of these enhanced drinks which contain mixtures of multiple compounds. The nomination of a mixture of energy drink components is further based on the popularity of energy drinks (especially among young adults), potential high levels of exposure, and possibility of chronic exposure. A mixture of caffeine, taurine, and guarana in a formulation at ratios commonly used in commercially-available energy drinks should minimally be considered. Consideration should also be given to inclusion of ginseng, inositol, L-carnitine, and/or the B vitamins.

NTP Principles: not specified
