Nomination Summary for Octachloronaphthalene (N96042)

Nominated Substances: 1,2,3,4,6,7-Hexachloronaphthalene (PCN 66), 1,2,3,5,6,7-Hexachloronaphthalene (PCN 67), Octachloronaphthalene

Nomination Date: 09/20/1996

Nominator: NCI

Rationale: Octachloronaphthalene (OCN) is nominated for an estrogenic activity screen and induction of P450 studies. The nomination is based on the potential for bioaccumulation, former production and widespread exposure, and inadvertent formation from incineration of products containing OCN. Although OCN is not currently produced and was never intentionally produced commercially as a pure compound, it was present as a component of various polychlorinated naphthalene products (halowaxes). These compounds were widely used in electrical insulation, fire resistant material, water repellents, wood preservatives, and lubricants.

NTP Principles: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7
