Nomination Summary for Propargyl alcohol (N96043)

Nominated Substances: Propargyl alcohol

Nomination Date: 09/20/1996

Nominator: NCI

Rationale: Propargyl alcohol is nominated for subchronic studies based on potential for human exposure and a suspicion of carcinogenicity. Propargyl alcohol is a high production volume chemical which is used mainly as a chemical intermediate for a variety of products. It has been identified in air, soil and solid waste. The suspicion of carcinogenicity is based on its metabolism to the aldehyde and positive results in genotoxicity studies. The hepatotoxicity observed in previous studies is similar to that produced by carbon tetrachloride. Chronic toxicity data is lacking.
