Rationale: Yohimbe bark extract is a dietary supplement used as an aphrodisiac and to enhance athletic performance. Yohimbine, the active ingredient, can cause an increase in blood pressure. No information on the genotoxicity or carcinogenicity of yohimbe or yohimbine was found. The structurally related compound reserpine was carcinogenic in both mice and rats. Yohimbine hydrochloride is a FDA approved prescription drug for the treatment of impotence.
