Nomination Summary for Octachlorostyrene (N20126)

Nominated Substances: Octachlorostyrene

Nomination Date: 03/14/2001

Nominator: NIEHS

Rationale: Octachlorostyrene (OCS) is a persistent and potentially widely distributed environmental contaminant with no carcinogenicity data. OCS is produced inadvertently during a number of industrial processes. Structurally similar compounds are established rodent carcinogens. OCS is one of the first compounds to be included in EPA's PBT Strategy, a pollution prevention program. Source identification for entry of OCS into the environment and pathways of human exposure are not well characterized. It is unclear if sufficient hazard and exposure data exist for OCS to justify the extensive regulatory interventions proposed by EPA.
