Nomination Summary for Paracetamol (acetaminophen) (N21609)
Nominated Substances: Acetaminophen (4-hydroxyacetanilide)
Nomination Date: 03/01/2016
Nominator: Private Individual
Rationale: There have been data emerging over the past several years that suggest that maternal consumption of paracetamol or other NSAIDs might have deleterious effects on gonadogenesis. This has been variably shown in rats and mice, and there are some supporting human data. Additionally, there is recent evidence that aniline is converted in the liver to paracetamol. The academic literature is too scattered and the studies are too small to provide real confidence in the strength of the signal. A thoughtful assessment of at least one of these compounds, and then an appropriate extension to the other NSAIDs, would help maintain public health.
