Rationale: Acetonitrile is a low molecular weight volatile used as a catalyst in chemical reactions and as a solvent in extractive distillation and crystallization of pharmaceutical and agricultural products. Relatively little work related to toxicology and no studies of carcinogenicity have been reported on this chemical in the literature. High potential of human exposure with no epidemiological studies or case reports on human exposure to acetonitrile and cancer incidence available.
