Nomination Summary for 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (N91102)

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin

Specific Substances: 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin

Nomination Date: 03/11/1991

Nominator: Private Individual

Rationale: Compelling evidence that ovarian hormones, probably estrogens, are required for hepatocarcinogenic actions of TCDD. Moreover, TCDD does not induce cell proliferation in the absence of estrogens. Since TCDD is considered the prototypical non-genotoxic carcinogen, it is an excellent candidate to study the relationship between cell proliferation and cancer.
