COAL TAR CASRN: 8007-45-2 Chemical structure for COAL TAR Coal Tar is a complex chemical mixture produced by the destructive distillation (pyrolysis) of coal. The chemical composition of coal tar is influenced by the origin and composition of the coal and also by the nature of the distilling process. As a result, coal tar is referred to by many different and confusing names in the literature, including Coal Tar Distillates (both Flammable and Combustible) and Crude Coal Tar. It is frequently, simply referred to as "Tar" or "Tars, Liquid". Coal Tar may also be confused with Coal Tar Pitch, and Coal Tar Creosote and Coal Tar Volatiles. Sometimes these terms are used inter-changeably and incorrectly. According to Kirk-Othmer, when any organic substance is pyrolyzed, it will yield tar and pitch and the differentiation between these terms is not precise. Generally, the byproduct liquid of fairly low viscosity at ordinary temperatures is regarded as a tar, whereas if very viscous, semisolid, or solid it is designated as a pitch. Coal tar creosotes are derived by the further fractional distillation of crude coal tars. The pyrolysis of other hydrocarbon constituents such as wood and petroleum will also produce tars, pitches and creosotes. Typically, these are labeled by the hydrocarbon source (e.g. wood creosote from pyrolysis of wood) resulting in additional confusion with products from the pyrolysis of coal, when common or shortened names are used (e.g. "Creosote" which could be coal tar creosote or wood creosote). Twelve of the 15 PAHs /considered in the Report on Carcinogens/ are used only in biochemical, biomedical, laboratory, and/or cancer research. At least 8 of the 15 PAHs are present in coal tar, which is used as a fuel in the steel industry in open-hearth and blast furnaces. Coal tar is also used in the clinical treatment of skin disorders such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Coal tar is distilled to produce a variety of coal tar products including coal tar pitch and creosote. At least 6 of the 15 PAHs are present in coal tar pitch, which is used primarily as a binder for aluminum smelting electrodes in the aluminum reduction process. Coal tar pitch is also used in roofing, surface coatings, for pitch coke production, and a variety of other applications... .
