Investigated as replacements for volatile organic solvents in industrial and laboratory processes because they are thought to be "environmentally benign." Future consumer products that may contain ionic liquids include batteries, fuel cells, solar cells and electrochromic devices, plastics plasticized with ionic liquids, and surgical implants.
