Known Uses

An oxidizing agent & bleach for pulp; to make chlorine dioxide for water disinfection; in ore processing; manufacture of matches & explosives; dye making & printing & dyeing fabrics; in leather finishing & tanning; to make perchlorates; toothpaste & mouthwash; as a nonselective herbicide, defoliant, & harvest aid; a stable by-product in drinking water that has been disinfected with chlorine dioxide. Associated with tobacco: reported either as a natural component of tobacco, pyrolysis product (in tobacco smoke), or additive for one or more types of tobacco products.
