Substance Overview
Primary Uses or Exposures
- A gram negative, multi-flagellated bacterium that colonizes the stomach and causes peptic ulcer.
- Spread by person-to-person contact especially among family members or in crowded living conditions or poor sanitation/hygiene.
- Routes of exposure include: oral-oral, fecal-oral and possibly from contaminated water. The bacterium has been detected in surface, ground, and well water in the United States.
- Approximately 36% of the total population are infected with H. pylori.
