Target Organs and Levels of Evidence for TR-483

Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Pentachlorophenol (CASRN 87-86-5) in F344/N Rats (Feed Studies)

Chemical (Study Title)
CASRN
Peer Review Date Route/Exposure Levels Study Laboratory
Pentachlorophenol, purified

Levels of Evidence

Male Rats: Some Evidence
Type Organ/Tissue (Lesion)
Neoplastic Lesions
  • Mesothelium (Abdominal Cavity/Tunica Vaginalis): MESOTHELIOMA 1/50 0/50 2/50 0/50 9/50 (STOP STUDY)
  • Nasal Cavity: CARCINOMA 1/50 3/50 1/50 0/50 5/50 (STOP STUDY)
Other Considerations
  • THE CONCLUSION OF SE IS BASED ON THE FINDING THAT PENTACHLOROPHENOL CAN BE CARCINOGENIC UNDER SOME CIRCUMSTANCES, AS WAS THE CASE IN THE STOP-STUDY EXPOSURE OF 1,000 PPM FOR ONE YEAR; HOWEVER UNDER STANDARD CONDITIONS, FOR MALE RATS GIVEN DOSES OF 200, 400, OR 600 PPM IN FEED FOR 2 YEARS, THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF CARCINOGENIC ACTIVITY.
Female Rats: No Evidence
