Primary Uses or Exposures

  • An alkylated benzene that is a natural component of petroleum and can also be synthesized from propylene and benzene.
  • Used primarily to produce phenol and acetone (accounting for 98% of all use).
  • People are exposed to cumene via inhalation in workplaces that produce or use cumene, and in gasoline-transport-related jobs.
  • People are exposed to cumene in their everyday lives primarily via breathing contaminated air as a result of its presence in petroleum and petroleum emissions cigarette smoke.
