Primary Uses or Exposures

  • An enveloped double-stranded DNA gamma-1 herpesvirus that causes infectious mononucleosis.
  • Spread mainly through contact with body fluids, especially saliva, from kissing and sharing food, drink, or toothbrushes. It may also be transmitted from contact with blood (blood transfusion and organ transplants), genital fluids, and breast milk.
