Primary Uses or Exposures

  • An enveloped single-stranded RNA retrovirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
  • Spread from unprotected sexual activity (oral, anal, or vaginal) and sharing of needles by injection. It can also be transmitted from mother to child through breast milk and during pregnancy and birth.
